Gauteng Strengthens China–South Africa Ties at 2026 Lunar New Year Celebration in Sandton
JOHANNESBURG – The 2026 Chinese Lunar New Year reception held in Sandton on 9 February became more than a cultural celebration; it evolved into a powerful platform reaffirming the growing partnership between China, South Africa and the broader African continent, with leaders highlighting the strategic importance of South-South cooperation.

Delivering a collaborative address, Speaker of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature, Hon. Morakane Mosupyoe, emphasised that the occasion coincides with the 2026 China–Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges, positioning the event as a catalyst for deeper diplomatic, economic and cultural engagement. She noted that China and South Africa share a “cordial relationship” rooted in cooperation across business, academia, governance and culture, adding that Gauteng has already hosted several Chinese delegations which resulted in Memorandums of Understanding and tangible investment across key sectors of the provincial economy.
The event, attended by Chinese Consul General Pan Qingjiang, government leaders and business stakeholders, reflected a broader shift towards multipolar global partnerships built on mutual respect and shared development. Speaker Mosupyoe highlighted that China-Africa relations are increasingly driven by collaboration rather than dependency, with investment flows, infrastructure development and trade partnerships continuing to unlock economic opportunities for both regions.
South Africa remains one of China’s largest trading partners in Africa, and bilateral relations are further strengthened through platforms such as BRICS and the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), which support infrastructure financing, industrialisation and skills development across the continent. Analysts note that China’s involvement in African economies has significantly boosted industrial capacity, digital innovation and job creation, particularly in provinces such as Gauteng, which serves as South Africa’s economic hub.
The Speaker reaffirmed Gauteng’s commitment to maintaining open negotiation channels for future strategic cooperative partnerships with China, stating that such engagements will help stimulate economic growth and investment while promoting shared prosperity.
Local residents also welcomed the celebration as a symbol of unity and cultural exchange. Tembisa-based entrepreneur Thandi Nkosi said the Lunar New Year festivities represent more than tradition.
“This celebration shows how cultures can connect while opening doors for business, tourism and education. Strong China-Africa relations mean more opportunities for young people and entrepreneurs in our communities,” she said.
The reception further highlighted the importance of cultural diplomacy in strengthening South-South relations, with leaders calling for continued collaboration in trade, innovation and people-to-people exchanges. As festivities marked the Spring Festival, Gauteng leaders reiterated their support for deeper China-Africa cooperation, describing the partnership as essential in building a more inclusive global economy and a shared future of development, investment and cultural solidarity.
