New BAIC B30 SUV to Offer High-Tech Features at an Affordable Price in South Africa

Beijing Automotive Industry Corporation (BAIC) is set to expand its presence in South Africa with the launch of the B30 SUV in 2025. The new vehicle, previously known as the BJ30 in China, will be BAIC’s most budget-friendly offering, positioned below the X55 Plus model. The B30 is designed to appeal to South African customers looking for an affordable, feature-packed family SUV.
The B30 measures 4,730 mm in length, 1,910 mm in width, and 1,790 mm in height, offering enough space for five passengers. It features a generous 2,820 mm wheelbase and a boot space of 1,496 liters when the rear seats are folded down, making it a practical option for families and outdoor enthusiasts. With a ground clearance of 215 mm and impressive off-road angles, the B30 is built for both city driving and rough terrain.
Buyers will have the option of choosing between front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive, with petrol and hybrid versions available. The petrol variant includes a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine producing 138kW of power and 305Nm of torque, paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. The hybrid models, called BJ30e, offer enhanced power and efficiency. The front-wheel-drive hybrid model produces 246kW and 550Nm, while the all-wheel-drive version delivers a total of 301kW and 685Nm. Both hybrid versions use a two-speed Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT).
The B30 boasts a modern design, setting it apart from other BAIC models like the X55 Plus and B40 Plus. Depending on the chosen trim level, the SUV will come with advanced features such as 18 or 19-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, a high-tech digital dashboard, ambient lighting, and heated and ventilated seats. Additional comforts include a wireless smartphone charger, a cooled glovebox, and a large 14.6-inch infotainment system.
For those who enjoy off-road driving, the B30’s all-wheel-drive hybrid model offers additional drive modes such as Mud, Sand, and Off-Road. Other standard driving modes include Eco, Standard, Sport, and Snow, ensuring adaptability to various road conditions.
Safety features are another key highlight of the B30. The SUV comes equipped with front and rear parking sensors, a tire pressure monitoring system, and a 360-degree camera. It also includes advanced driver assistance systems such as Automatic Emergency Braking, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Departure Warning, and Blind Spot Monitoring.
The B30 will be available in several colours, including Pearl White, Jet Black, Matte Grey, Charcoal Grey, Sky Blue, and Pistachio Green. While official pricing has not yet been announced, it is expected to start at around R300,000, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious buyers.
BAIC’s investment in South Africa has not been without challenges. The company’s assembly plant in Gqeberha, developed in partnership with the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), has faced difficulties in meeting production targets. Despite this, BAIC remains committed to the South African market and sees the launch of the B30 as an opportunity to strengthen its position in the country.
With its combination of affordability, advanced features, and hybrid technology, the B30 is expected to make a significant impact in South Africa’s competitive SUV market.
