Africa’s Agricultural Heritage Takes Centre Stage in Johannesburg
Sixteen African countries are coming together in Johannesburg from 28–30 September 2026 as the FAO hosts a regional workshop on Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS).
The initiative, supported by FAO-China South-South Cooperation, aims to strengthen Africa’s ability to protect and promote traditional farming systems that support food security, biodiversity, climate resilience and sustainable rural livelihoods.
South Africa is hosting representatives from countries including Botswana, Zambia, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Eswatini, Ghana, Nigeria and Tanzania.
Africa’s traditional agricultural knowledge is not just history — it could be part of the continent’s sustainable future.
