UN Opens Applications for 2026 Reham al-Farra Memorial Journalism Fellowship
The United Nations has announced that applications are now open for the 2026 Reham al-Farra Memorial Journalism Fellowship (RAF), a prestigious programme aimed at empowering young journalists to deepen their understanding of the UN and global affairs. Interested applicants have until 3 April 2026 to submit their applications.
Mandated by the UN General Assembly, the RAF Fellowship is designed to support talented journalists from developing countries and economies in transition by offering them an opportunity to engage directly with the work of the United Nations. The programme seeks to strengthen international reporting and enhance journalists’ capacity to cover global issues such as peace, development, climate change, and human rights.
The fellowship is open to full-time working journalists aged between 22 and 35 who are nationals of eligible countries, including South Africa and many other nations across Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East. Applicants are expected to demonstrate professional journalism experience and a strong interest in international affairs and UN-related topics.
Through the fellowship, selected participants gain first-hand exposure to the UN’s operations, including briefings with senior UN officials, training sessions with media experts, and opportunities to interact with fellow journalists from around the world. The programme also allows fellows to expand their global networks and enhance their professional skills while covering international developments relevant to their home countries.
Established in 1980, the fellowship was later renamed in honour of Reham al-Farra, a young UN public information officer who lost her life in the 2003 bombing of the UN headquarters in Baghdad. Over the years, the programme has supported hundreds of journalists globally, contributing to more informed and balanced reporting on international issues.
The United Nations has encouraged interested media professionals to carefully review the eligibility requirements and frequently asked questions before applying. Applications must be submitted online, along with supporting documents such as work samples, a curriculum vitae, and references.
For young journalists seeking global exposure and professional growth, the RAF Fellowship presents a valuable opportunity to develop leadership skills, broaden international perspectives, and contribute meaningfully to informed journalism in their respective countries.
