SPAR Introduces R1 Billion Savings Initiative Amid Rising Living Costs

In response to escalating living expenses, The SPAR Group has launched a R1 billion savings initiative through its SPAR Rewards programme, aiming to provide South African consumers with substantial discounts on everyday essentials. This initiative runs from February 24 to April 21, 2025, across all SPAR stores nationwide.

By enrolling in the free SPAR Rewards programme and swiping their Rewards card at checkout, customers can access exclusive savings on a wide array of products, including fresh produce, pantry staples, and household necessities. The programme offers immediate discounts, and members can conveniently use a virtual card via the SPAR App, allowing them to browse monthly deals and utilize their cellphone number at the till if they forget their physical card.

Mpudi Maubane, National PR, Communications & Sponsorships Manager at The SPAR Group, emphasized the company’s commitment to alleviating financial pressures: “We understand the financial strain many South Africans are facing. Through our SPAR Rewards programme, we’re giving customers access to significant savings that can help ease their monthly expenses.”

This initiative aligns with recent governmental measures aimed at supporting consumers. The 2025 Budget Speech highlighted steps such as increasing social grants above inflation and expanding the basket of VAT zero-rated food items to include canned vegetables, dairy liquid blends, and organ meats from various animals. These efforts are designed to mitigate the impact of a forthcoming VAT increase, set to rise from 15% to 15.5% on April 1, 2025, and to 16% in the 2026/27 fiscal year.

The SPAR Group’s R1 billion savings initiative complements these governmental efforts by providing immediate, tangible relief to consumers during a period of economic adjustment. By offering substantial discounts on essential items, SPAR says that it aims to make a meaningful difference in the daily lives of South Africans, ensuring that every rand goes further in meeting household needs.
