National Lotteries Commission: Empowering South Africa Through Grant Funding
The National Lotteries Commission (NLC) has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting civil society organizations across South Africa, ensuring continued funding for initiatives that drive positive social change. Despite uncertainties surrounding the 4th National Lottery and Sport Pools Licence, the NLC assured stakeholders of its robust contingency plans to maintain funding for good causes.
2023/24 Grant Funding Achievements
The NLC successfully concluded adjudication for applications received during its 2023/24 funding cycle, disbursing funds to sectors critical to social and economic development. Key highlights include:
Charities Sector:
Allocations totalled R781.8 million, supporting vulnerable communities with the following breakdown:
60% to poverty alleviation, abuse prevention, and disability programs.
25% to Early Childhood Development (ECD), fostering education and youth growth.
1% to food security initiatives to combat hunger and malnutrition.
6% to animal welfare programs.
Arts, Culture, and Heritage: With R309 million allocated:
77% empowered creatives and preserved cultural heritage.
12% supported environmental and heritage programs.
11% advanced arts and cultural education for youth.
Sport and Recreation: A total of R332.4 million was directed to youth sports programs, with 52% specifically allocated to school sports development. Notably, a R39.3 million grant to SASCOC facilitated Team South Africa’s participation in the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
New Initiatives and Accessibility Enhancements
The NLC continues to evolve its processes to ensure inclusivity and efficiency. In November 2024, the NLC announced its 2024/25 Call for Applications, moving to a fully online system. To remove barriers, the commission will zero-rate its website starting at the end of January 2025, enabling applicants to access the platform without incurring data costs.
Additionally, free resources and training are being offered through Smart Skills Centres, established by the Chemical Industries Education and Training Authority (CHIETA) at TVET colleges nationwide. Provincial NLC offices remain open to assist applicants, ensuring compliance and completeness of submissions.
A Pillar of Community Development
The NLC plays a pivotal role in funding initiatives that improve the lives of South Africans. Its comprehensive approach ensures that every rand allocated generates meaningful impact, from providing educational opportunities to fostering talent in sports and the arts.
According to the NLC Board, the organization’s strategic interventions and strengthened governance have been instrumental in maintaining its mission. The support provided over the past financial year underscores its dedication to uplifting communities.
Looking Ahead
With the 2024/25 application cycle underway, the NLC invites organizations to register and apply before the February 28, 2025 deadline. The commission emphasizes the importance of collaboration and transparency to ensure funding reaches those who need it most.
